Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) is using advanced digital technologies to increase output by 25 percent at an offshore field.

ADNOC said in a news release that its offshore Satah Al Razboot (SARB) field has achieved a 25 percent increase in production capacity to a total of 140,000 barrels per day (bpd), through the implementation of “industry-leading advanced digital technologies”. The increase at SARB field supports its target to increase its production capacity to 5 million barrels of oil per day by 2027.

Located 75 miles (120 kilometers) northwest of Abu Dhabi, the digital solutions implemented onsite at SARB allow the field to be operated remotely from Zirku island, which is around 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) away, ADNOC claimed.

Remote monitoring, smart well operations and production management technologies are integrated at the remote control center for optimized real-time decision-making, ADNOC said, adding that this has enabled accelerated growth in field capacity with reduced costs and emissions. The field’s digitalization will also enable the deployment of additional artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to further enhance and optimize operations, the state-owned oil major said.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC Upstream Executive Director, said, “AI and digitalization are at the heart of ADNOC’s smart growth strategy to help responsibly meet the world’s growing energy demand. By deploying industry-leading technologies at SARB field, we have increased production capacity while enhancing the safety, sustainability and efficiency of our operations, strengthening ADNOC’s position as one of the world’s lowest-cost and least carbon intensive energy producers”.

The technologies deployed at SARB field include tools developed by AIQ, the Abu Dhabi-based AI firm targeting to deliver transformative solutions to the energy sector, according to the release. AIQ solutions DrillRep and OptiDrill process data from rigs and wells at the field, enhancing drilling efficiency and optimization. By utilizing daily drilling data reports and rig sensor data, AIQ’s technology supports drilling operations with the necessary insights and actions to optimize the drilling process.

Last month, ADNOC deployed RoboWell, AIQ’s AI autonomous well-control solution, in its operations at the offshore NASR field. RoboWell uses cloud-based AI algorithms to autonomously operate wells that self-adjust according to changing conditions. The solution enhances the safe operation of the well, improves efficiency, reduces the need for travel and physical interventions, minimizing emissions. ADNOC said it was the world’s first offshore deployment of RoboWell.

RoboWell has been deployed across an initial 10 wells at NASR, with further deployment of the AI solution scheduled for over 300 wells across ADNOC’s offshore and onshore operations this year, according to an earlier release.

In May, ADNOC partnered with big data analytics firm Presight AI Holding PLC to acquire a 51 percent stake in AIQ. The transaction will combine AIQ’s breakthrough AI energy solutions with Presight’s cross-sector big data analytics, product development, and international market access. This will position AIQ as a leading energy-focused AI organization, according to a separate statement.
